Richard, Carol, and Arunachala

I’m an American woman who has recently retired to India with my American husband, Richard Clarke. This move to Tiruvannamalai in South India has been just extraordinary. Every day brings a new adventure, along with ever-deepening meditations on the nature of The Self, my self.

For many, many years, beginning with Ram Dass and The Autobiography of a Yogi, stirred by a passing reference to Nonduality in a college religion course, I’ve been putting the puzzle pieces together in the effort to find out what the heck is REALLY going on in this so-called life. Richard brought me to my Teacher, Nome, in 1991.

My job for many years was in corporate marketing and communications. I finally found my bliss as an activity director in assisted living communities, doing work that really matters.

My greatest accomplishments are my brilliant, talented, charming children–Amy, an actor/singer/comedienne in New York, and Brody, a student at the prestigious Art Center in Los Angeles.

Richard is posting fabulous photos and stories of our adventures on his blog at www.luthar.com. He gets many more page views than I do, so please come back and visit my blog often!

Hi Carol…I have stumbleds on your delightful blook while considering to make a trip over there. I was so happy to see your activist impulse in action, helping the local people to help themselves. The project for older people sounds particularly wonderful.
THat kind of work inspires me.

Lately I have studying Ramana Maharshi teaching and planing to travel to India and spend couple of weeks in Tiruvannamalai. This is something new for me…would you be kind enough to give me a bit of advice how to get started with planning my trip? I want to learn deeper from Ramana and whatever great teachers are there now. Also hopefully connect with kindred spiritss and have a great vacation. I will be travelling with my friend Ashraf by the second half of january.
How should we go about renting an apartment or hotel? Do I need to make a deal for tyransportation ahead of time? i’m an older guy 68 with health issues.

      hi Carol
thanking to your previous encouragement and help
I’m about to depart to Tiru for a 2 week vacation, starting Jan 18.. Needless to say, I’m excited. I did ask he ashram if they have accommodation for me. They have agreed to accommodate me for the first three nights. That will give me an initial place to chill out from the jet lag. And the second day I can go looking for a hotel to stay for the rest of my trip. I’m hoping that I can meet in person you and your husband Richard, whose blog i have also read. Could i invite you for lunch or dinner and get from you a bit of the way of the land? How would we meet?
      excited

    Hi Carol,

I’m curious how you went about learning Tamil. I’m beginning to study Tamil and always looking for tips.

It’s nice to read your blogs.
